Like wedding rings, eternity rings are a symbol of everlasting love. Although eternity rings are frequently given to celebrate an anniversary or other special event such as the birth of a child, there is no precise occasion for which to give this exceptional gift. Styles and price ranges of eternity rings vary, as do settings and stones. "Full" eternity rings have stones all the way around the band, making them impractical for many wearers due to the thickness of the band. Also, the stones used must be fairly small. Full rings cannot be readily sized, so they must be custom made. Consequently, most jewelers do not carry sample rings in stock. Because they must be custom sized and designed, full eternity rings are also pricier than "half" rings.
Half eternity rings only have stones across the face of the band, making them easier to create and to size, which is reflected in their price. They are more comfortable to wear and larger stones can be used in half rings. Some women also prefer this style since all of the stones can easily be seen.
Eternity rings are most commonly set with diamonds. Other stones such as emeralds, rubies, and sapphires are also popular choices, but diamonds are the undisputed favorite. The shape of the stones is as important as the type of stone, with oblong or square stones usually being preferred to round. Square or rectangular cut stones are easier to set end to end around a band, making them perfect for eternity rings.
When deciding how to wear eternity rings, personal choice is the most important consideration. Eternity rings are usually worn on the same finger as wedding rings. They may be worn in addition to the engagement ring and wedding band, or in place of either one. Many women choose to replace their wedding band with an eternity ring and wear it along with their engagement ring.
While the style, stones, and placement of eternity rings are important to consider, the sentiment conveyed by an eternity ring is the most important part of the gift. | |
