Dear Friends,
You probably have heard that our friend Mariel Bantug (de Guzman) is
currently battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She was diagnosed with this
condition only last January 31. Her case was complicated because she was
seven months pregnant at that time.
Since she was diagnosed, she has been confined at the Asian Hospital.
Chemotherapy was administered to her from February 5 to February 13.
She
went into labor unexpectedly on the afternoon of February 15, and doctors
were able to perform a caesarean section to deliver the baby.
The baby, because it was born premature, is currently kept in an incubator.
Meanwhile, Mariel has been on Intensive Care since the 15th. Aside from
recovering from her surgery to deliver the baby, Mariel is also experiencing
some complications to her liver, lungs and heart.
We are writing this letter to update you of her situation, and also to
appeal to you who have known Mariel as a friend. In the coming days, doctors
will evaluate Mariel’s response to the chemotherapy and a decision will have
to be made whether to proceed with another round of chemotherapy or to do a
bone marrow transplant.
As hospital bills continue to pile up, Mariel’s insurance coverage is
beginning to get depleted.
Mariel has been hospitalized from January 31 and will continue
to be
monitored at least until March 8. Baby will be kept in an incubator for the
next few days. The professional fee for the specialist who will perform the
Bone Marrow transplant, is expected to run up to P2.5Mn.
We, as friends of Mariel, are trying to raise funds to be made available to
Mariel’s family. We are hoping that by this additional support, it will be
easier for her family to decide to pursue any further treatment that Mariel
will need to get better.
One of our friends, Alvin Retamar, has opened a Savings Account, and has
turned over the ATM card to Mariel’s husband. You can go to any BPI branch
